WINTER 2021 NEWS

BEING TOGETHER \\

2021 was a serious, heads down kind of year. Our studio has been involved in many projects across the country and world. We feel grateful that our work has contributed to activating spaces and bringing people together in an extraordinary time of uncertainty.

We are thankful for the trust our clients, collaborators and students have placed in us. We are fortunate to be surrounded by optimistic people who believe in the future of creativity, beauty, craft and the power of shared public space.

We are excited to share an update on things before taking a break for the New Year … the making of magical things in complex times, the many lovely and talented people involved, the extraordinary materials and colors, the space, the light, the sound. We wish you the best in the new year!

Cheers, Jason & Nataly

IN PROGRESS \\

Our future takes us to new projects at ocV!BE in Anaheim CA, Cityline in Sunnyvale CA, El Paso TX, Scottsdale AZ, and we are lucky to be working on several new exciting projects in San Francisco! … including a series of topiary-inspired sculptures for Potrero Gateway, a 250’ long sculptural sidewalk canopy wrapping the corner of Van Ness Ave and Market St, a jelly-fish inspired chandelier for our very own American Industrial Center, and last but not least - an illuminated awning sculpture for Counterpulse, an awesome experimental art and performance space in the Tenderloin. Stay tuned for more in progress reports!

NEWS \\

We have been fortunate to have won several awards this year and our work was featured in several new publications. From visions of the post-covid future office, to designs for a city-wide outdoor public arts network; our work has received awards from CODAworx, Design Educates Award, London International Creative, the Architecture Masterprize and the Architect’s Newspaper Best of Design Award to name a few. We also look forward to seeing our work included in a couple of forthcoming publications: FLUX: Architecture in a Parametric Landscape, by Berman & Kudless and Ambiguous Territory, edited by Dwyre, Perry, Salomon and Velikov.

We were excited to be finally back in person for final reviews at the California College of the Arts! It is great to be engaging in discussions about design, architecture and art together again! Nataly and Jason will be busy teaching again in the Spring. Jason is also in the midst of planning a new Digital Craft Lab space in CCA’s new “Double Ground” buildings designed by the amazing Studio Gang.

UPCOMING EVENT \\

Our upcoming lecture on Jan. 6 for the Architecture League’s Distance Edition, which will be moderated by Jesse Reiser, brought back memories of the It’s Different Architectural League Prize exhibition in 2011! Seems like yesterday that we exhibited our work in NYC, including Aurora, Glaciarium and Supergalaxy

TEAM \\

We would not be able to do any of this without the incredibly talented and dedicated team of people working in our studio. To say it has been a “challenging year” is a serious understatement. After enduring stay-at-home orders and various shutdowns - we have somehow mostly stayed sane, healthy and hopeful.

Brian McKinney and Clayton Williams, in addition to both getting married this year, have been managing extraordinary projects near and far. Nat Abbott has been keeping our fabrication on track and our shop in shape. Carlos Sabogal is now leading our computational design efforts from his outpost in New Mexico. Chris Leo has been designing, making, crafting and dabbling with robots in his free time. Sam Higgwe has been visualizing our world using all the AR and VR tricks he can conjure up, Ki Schmidt has been busy with fabrication and assembling anything out of metal, while Eve Tobey has made some beautiful models and will be joining us full time in the new year! We also send out greetings to Valerie Tse who left us to pursue an MArch degree at UPenn in Philadelphia, and Lee Marom who relocated to NYC! And we cannot forget Tschumi …. our pet mascot!  It has been a while since we have been able to give a shout out to them all!

THANK YOU!
