“Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were. But without it we go nowhere.”
-Carl Sagan
Confluence is a public artwork that creates a dynamic focal point for the visitors of the park and recreation fields. Prominently situated, the sculpture appears to dynamically shift and change depending on the viewer’s position. Visible from afar, the artwork becomes a wayfinding element in the landscape; viewed from a car or pedestrian navigating the roundabout, the artwork shape shifts as the form evolves and changes, creating a multiplicity of forms.
The twisted inner bronze-colored surface of the artwork is constructed through a series of curved tubes that form a smoother and more topographical surface. The outer metallic envelope is faceted and modular, creating a more constructed surface. The contrasting surface qualities produce various visual effects with the convex surfaces collecting light and color from their surroundings, and the concave surfaces holding dark shadows as the day progresses. In the evening the artwork will be lit around its perimeter, revealing new patterns and illuminated surface effects, attracting viewers at all hours. The possibility of different color lighting could completely transform the artwork at night and could be something to consider.
Confluence references things that are bigger than us: ideas of universality and continuity; infinity and the power of humanity to explore and to be united by the unknown.
